Chapter II | The Art World c.1992

I was an art history major with a minor in fine art and thought the typical trajectory was to work in the art world. I was more attracted to the commerce side of art vs the scholarly and decided I wanted to work in an auction house. As a kid growing up in NYC, I took a job every summer and one summer I worked in the Jewelry Department of Christie’s Auction House showing magnificent jewels by hand to potential buyers. Christie’s called this “white glove marketing” meaning to sell luxury goods you needed a one on one approach versus the mass marketing I applied later on to other more aspirational brands. I finally landed my dream job in the marketing department of Christie’s creating marketing, sales and communication plans for the most exclusive and high-profile auctions.
